Diode act as a valve in electronic & electrical circuit.It allows current in only one direction (i.e ideally short circuit) and blocks in opposite direction (i.e ideally open circuit).Diode starts conduct when the applied voltage is greater than threshold voltage (vth).For silicon vth-0.7v,germanium vth-0.3v.

PN Diode-P-type and N type semiconductor is combined together to form PN diode and here doping level is low.PN diode operates Only when it is connected to forward biased voltage.If pn diode operates in reverse bias at certain voltage diode gets damaged.The PN diode widely used in rectifiers,detectors,clippers,clampers etc.,
Zener diode – zener diode also made up of pn material but here doping level is high.zener operates at both forward bias as well as reverse bias region.It is also known as voltage regulator because it controls the voltage and protects the load.

MOSFET is a another category of FET but it has four terminals gate, source,drain & substrate here gate of the MOSFET is insulated from the channel by silicon dioxide layer.Two types of MOSFET are enchancement & depletion MOSFET has high input impedance & low output impedance & it is mainly used in low power circuits,chip design technology.
E-MOSFET – In enhancement MOSFET there will not be any channel between source and drain untill gate voltage is applied.If the applied gate voltage is above threshold value channel is created between source and drain.The conductivity of the channel starts by increasing gate to source voltage.
 D-MOSFET – In depletion MOSFET there will be inbuilt channel between drain & source adjacent to the insulated gate.The D-MOSFET can be operated at two modes depletion mode or enhancement mode.Since gate is insulated either positive or negative gate voltage can be applied.

Depletion mode-  If n-channel mosfet operates in depletion mode, negative gate to source voltage is applied so conduction electrons repels in channel & leave positive ions in their position due to this n channel depleted of some of its electrons,thus decreasing channel conductivity.If more negative gate voltage is applied there will not be conductivity in channel.If gate voltage is zero then conduction occurs between drain to source.
Enhancement mode- If n-channel mosfet operates in enhancement mode, positive gate to source voltage is applied then more conduction electron are attracted into the channel,thus increasing the channel conductivity.But depletion mode is more preferable than enhancement mode.

The term bipolar means current conduction happens because of both holes and electrons.It is a current controlled device & amplifies the flow of electric current.BJT has three terminals base,emitter & collector.Base is lightly doped,emitter is heavily doped & collector is moderately doped.Two types of BJT are NPN & PNP transistor.

NPN Transistor- The transistor operated in three modes cutoff, saturation & active mode.In cutoff mode both emitter to base & collector base junction are reverse biased,so no current flows it acts like an open switch.In saturation mode both emitter to base & collector base junction are forward biased,so huge current flows it acts like an closed switch.In active mode emitter to base is forward biased & collector base junction is reverse biased,so amplification of currently takes place here.
PNP Transistor- The operation of PNP is same as NPN transistor.The major difference is charge carriers, in PNP holes carry most of the current but switching time is slower.

JFET is a type of FET that operates at reverse biased Junction to control current in the channel.In JFET conduction occurs when gate to source is set to reverse bias voltage & external voltage is applied between drain to source that supplies current from drain to source.If we increase gate voltage then depletion region formed inside channel & it increase channel resistance therefore drain current will be reduced.Two types of JFET are n-channel JFET,p-channel JFET.In n-channel current conduction happens due to electrons & p-channel holes carry electric current.
